PASSi receives Federal Grant as Navigators to Assist Asian Americans with Health Insurance Education and Enrollment

Penn Asian Senior Services (PASSi) is excited to announce that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded a $255,000 Navigator grant to PASSi to assist English-limited Asian Americans navigate their health care coverage options in the Health Insurance Marketplace. PASSi was one of six awardees selected from the entire state of Pennsylvania.

The Affordable Care Act provides increased access to affordable health insurance plans for the uninsured through the Federal Health Insurance Marketplace. However, many Asian Americans with limited-English proficiency struggle with the selection and enrollment processes because almost all resources are only available in English.

According to the 2010 Census, the Philadelphia region has 106,720 Asian Americans, 47% of whom have limited English proficiency. There is an urgent need for culturally and linguistically appropriate information and service delivery. Currently, 21% of Asian Americans in Philadelphia are uninsured, creating various health disparities from a lack of primary and preventative healthcare.
